A Breathe-Through.

He lives most life whoever breathes most air. ~ Elizabeth Barrett Browning

I’ve been thinking a lot about the breath, and energy; how holding onto the breath leads to a build up of muscular tension.

I have become accustomed to breathing through a pose, yet it’s when I lay in Savasana and hold my breath — unintentionally– while wrestling with such thoughts as, “Why does my <insert body part here> hurt so much? Ugh,  it’s so painful…” that has been holding my practice back.

So, today I was coerced into trying something different purely because I decided to listen to the teacher. What a crazy concept, right? Yet not “hearing” the teacher is quite an easy trap to fall into during a monologue-driven class.

Ordinarily, the words, “Breathe into it,” would wash over me like every other cliche — my eyes glaze over and my ears go on mute. But today, after enduring Camel’s deep backbend after a few days’ hiatus from the 26+2, the teacher’s words  beckoned me to push the breath into my lower back during Savasana. I visualised the breath soothing the lower back muscles while I allowed the rest of my body to literally lay back.  What happened next was a breathe-through: the pain didn’t puncture so badly, and my mind, devoid of any tense thoughts, felt lighter too.

After all these years, I am still learning the key aspects of yoga. After every class, I feel like I’ve learned something new. Now, if only I could “hear” the words, “Suck your stomach in…”
